Remember Avocado & Harvest Gold as a fashion statement? Those were good times.
The theme for Fiber Friday (a weekly creative fiber challenge on LiveJournal where I used to have my blog) this week is Kitsch. I chose to express it through the kitschiest era that I have lived in, the 70s.
Who can forget the subtle colors and textures.
This was the inspiration for my yarn.I made four batts on my trusty drum carder from commercially dyed Merino wool roving. Each batt was split into twelve strips.
I spun it into DK weight singles and Navajo-plied it for a nice bulky weight yarn.
But, that yarn isn't nearly garish enough to qualify as kitsch. So true.
Knit it up with short rows and a dose of Sonny Bono's vest via dyed Cotswold locks.
Makes me want to macrame some plant hangers for my spider plants.
A pattern for this scarf is forthcoming and I need a name for it. I suck at naming things.
So, I will have a little naming contest. The winner will get a skein of my handspun yarn from the handspun stash.
70's aren't my era, but that is REALLY cool!!!!
I love the scarf pattern, done up in pink & black it would be so adorable

This is good. I'll be thinking. Hey, I remember a friend of my mother's had the COOLEST macrame plant hangers with the big wooden beads and all. It reminded me of Rhoda's apartment (in the Rhoda show, not MTM, remember that one?).
I'll be thinking.
OK: My first entry is----
Dy-no-miiiiite.
Lame. I'm still thinking.

Oooh I love the 70's.
I could give you tons of ideas. Here's a few:

Jinkies! (love Scooby Doo)
Neato!
Stylin'

Disco
I could go on and on. It made me laugh just remembering all of these. Thanks for bringing up the 70's. I have so many good memories from that time!

It needs a name as over the top and kitschy as it is.
I'd call it Shag-a-lucious!

What a cool scarf!!! How about "That 70's Scarf" or "I Got Curves Babe." ;-)

It's a really cool looking scarf. My suggestion is Bono-fide. After all, Sony Bono's vest was part of the inspiration.

My grandparent's house was done in avocado green, harvest yellow, and burnt orange. My aunt has some of the furniture from their house. It always cracks me up whenever I go over to her house.
As for a name, how about "scarf it to me" ala laugh-in?

It's terrific! Can't wait for the pattern :)
It makes me think of this so-ridiculously-70s-it's-funny movie: The Girl in Gold Boots. So that would be my suggestion.
Either that or "Polyester" because of the joke about the 70s my mom always quotes: "I'm going to save some of my clothes so my kids can feel what real polyester was like."

Hi, I just followed a link here from Jessie's blog, and am enjoying looking at your spinning.
At the risk of being too obvious, how about just "Shazam!"?

I think you've said it all. That is definately a "Spider Plant Scarf" if I ever saw on. Macrame plant hanger, leafy tendrils and all.
