My Eye Candy Friday contribution is a little late today.
It is the lovely Cerrito Theater in El Cerrito California. Originally built in the 1937, it had fallen into disrepair. The marquee had been removed. When we moved to the neighborhood ten years ago I never would have guessed that a movie theater was there.
About five years ago, folks start trying to resurrect the Cerrito. We went to a community meeting about the theater several years back and it looked much like this. The original Art Deco murals and etched glass were largely intact. Its saving grace was that it was storage for a mattress store. Click on the links to see some great pictures.
This week the Cerrito reopened. It has been completely restored and refurbished. The people who run it also run another theater, the Parkway in Oakland. Both theaters serve food and beer and host special events. We love the Parkway and have anxiously been awaiting the opening of the Cerrito, less than one mile from our house.
Tonight we went to the new Cerrito Theater for the first time. And it was good.
We like the Parkway but rarely go--I'm excited to check the Cerrito out. And I would never have known there was once a theater in that block, either.
