I love reading these. Mine is heavy on the crafty stuff for obvious reasons.
- I am married to the sweetest man on earth, Roger. I love him more every day and find him to be very cute. He also has the sexiest brain I know.
- I still learn something new from living with and knowing Roger. It is a good thing.
- I met Roger in 1993, just after my 30th birthday.
- Turning 30 was the best thing that ever happened to me. Until I turned 40 that is. Life is definitely improving with age.
- I grew up with cats, but now I am a dog person. I think I was always a dog person and just didn’t know it.
- I have two rescued Boston Terriers, Toby who is a senior (between 11-13 years old) and Sammie (4 years old). They are my babies.
- I grew up doing crafty things. We made some of our own clothes, decorated the Christmas tree only with handmade ornaments, and cooked from scratch.
- I can’t remember learning how to knit. I remember my mother telling me to learn crochet first because it is easier. Under duress, I did learn crochet first; I don’t remember who taught me. My mother still doesn’t know how to crochet. She must have taught me how to knit though because I learned Norwegian purling. My mother learned to knit in Norway as a young teen and still makes beautiful Norwegian sweaters.
- I re-taught myself how to purl because Norwegian purling takes too long.
- I taught myself how to design sweaters and do stranded knitting, intarsia, cables, lace, etc. I have been able to do any knitting technique I have tried.
- I remember my grandmother teaching me how to sew and iron. Oh how I loved ironing.
- I’m over that whole ironing thing now. So over it.
- I have a very hard time following other people’s patterns. I rarely can resist the urge to make changes. I am the same way with recipes.
- I love knitting swatches. It is not unusual for me to try 4-8 pattern stitches before I find the right one.
- My favorite knitting books are my Barbara Walker Treasuries of Knitting Patterns.
- I have tried many different hobbies, but remain loyal to only a few, especially knitting and spinning.
- I like starting projects better than finishing them.
- I am serially monogamous with my hobbies.
- I am either very good at things naturally or very bad. I cannot throw a pot to save my life. And, please, don’t throw something at me and expect me to catch it.
- I learned to spin on May 1, 2005. It seems like I have always been a spinner.
- I really love spinning, maybe more than knitting. Maybe.
- I was the first girl to take woodshop at my school (Tobin school in Cambridge, Massachusetts). I already knew how to do everything they were teaching in home economics.
- When I was in grade school, the only other Maia (any spelling) I knew lived on the same street as me, just half a block away.
- I have only been to four countries outside of the U.S.: Canada, England, Germany, and Italy. I loved them all and want to go back.
- I have been to at least 30 states. I need to count them all one of these days.
- I love color. My favorite color is yellow, followed by brown and orange. And, no, I do not have a 70s owl fetish.
- I used to wear bright jewel tones. Roger has shown me the beauty in earth tones and neutrals, which is what I usually prefer now.
- I used to spend a lot of time on my clothes, jewelry, and hair. Now, not so much (dripping with understatement).
- Roger is under strict orders not to nominate me for What Not to Wear. Seriously.
- I am a native Californian (San Francisco Bay Area) and feel this is home for me.
- I have also lived in several cities around Boston, Massachusetts and in Seattle, Washington.
- I found that you can take the girl out of New England AND take the New England out of the girl. I doubt I will ever live there again.
- I was 6 when I first saw snow. I remember touching it and being absolutely shocked that it was cold.
- I don’t want to live somewhere cold enough for snow again.
- When I was 9 I thought I could be anything I wanted to be. By the time I was a young teen I had realized how stupid that thought is. Now, I am beginning to think I was right at 9.
- I didn’t know how to drive when I met Roger. I got my license at 31.
- I drive on B100 biodiesel. I prefer that it be made from waste oil.
- I eat meat, but I am turning towards vegetarian food more and more.
- I have always loved vegetables. My current favorites are corn, onions, garlic, zucchini, and artichokes.
- I eat salad with homemade salad dressing for dinner at least 3-4 times a week.
- I hate cleaning.
- I really hate cleaning.
- I am more interested in being organized than tidy. Sadly, I am not always tidy enough to be organized.
- I prefer odd numbers.
- I try to design my knitting with numbers that I like.
- I love math.
- My hobbies either involve math or I make them math oriented. I didn’t set out to do this. It is more of an observation than a rule.
- I am an engineer which seems to contradict my personal interests which are all “women’s work”.
- I like being an engineer.
- I blame the “engineer gene” for my lack of make-up and casual dress when really it is because I am too lazy for primping and I hate clothes shopping.
- I love baseball. The San Francisco Giants to be exact. Yes, I am a Barry Bonds fan. No apologies for that will be forth coming.
- I hate the Dodgers and Dodger blue. The f-bomb always comes to mind when I speak of the Dodgers, even if I don’t say it out loud.
- Roger and I have a deal when it comes to foul balls at the ballpark. I duck, he catches, I get the ball. He may not know the last part. Shhh, don’t tell him.
- We have never had to test this arrangement.
- I wish I had a house with a basement.
- I love old black & white movies, especially if they have Cary Grant, Katherine Hepburn, Audrey Hepburn, Bette Davis, or Barbara Stanwick.
- I love old TV shows, especially The Dick Van Dyke Shown, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Soap, Maverick, Have Gun Will Travel, Newhart, and The Prisoner.
- I saw Sunset Boulevard for the first time recently. It may be my favorite movie.
- I am also quite fond of Blazing Saddles and Princess Bride.
- I was a voracious reader as a child.
- I don’t read much any more.
- My favorite books are House of Spirits by Isabelle Allende and Beloved by Toni Morrison.
- I love music even though I don’t listen to it often.
- I like (in no particular order) old-timey country, bluegrass, classical, soul, punk, new wave, rock, rockabilly, folk (from many countries including my own), reggae, ska, the blues (more country blues than city or Chicago blues), early Jazz (pre big band) and occasionally opera.
- I can’t play any musical instruments. I have tried guitar, flute, violin, and autoharp. I sucked at them all.
- I can dance. I used to go to dances regularly, usually contra or square dances.
- I love to waltz.
- I have never waltzed with Roger.
- I am very intolerant of intolerance.
- Equality means just that: equality. A person’s race, creed, country of origin, gender preference, (dis)ability, size, or education does not deny them equality.
- I love amber. I have more jewelry made from amber than any other gemstone.
- I hate diamonds and refuse to wear them.
- I believe in voting with my dollars. I will not support stores or businesses that I don’t like.
- Mean people suck. I try to avoid them whenever possible.
- I hate myself most when I am mean or stupid.
- I am amazingly good at saying stupid things.
- I am better at giving advice than taking it.
- I give advice too readily.
- I tend to follow rules and resent cheaters.
- Unless the rules are completely stupid.
- I think I say “stupid” too much.
- I am a procrastinator. In fact, I excel at it.
- I have too much stuff. I want to get rid of it, but it all seems useful, or valuable, or something.
- I am still wondering when I will grow up.
- I am not very good at holding a grudge.
- I tend to forget why I was mad at someone.
- I am trying to get over the idea that everything has to be done in a certain order. It really just means that I get nothing done.
- I believe in being the best person I can be.
- I try to learn from my mistakes.
- Everything in life is any opportunity to learn something.
- Sometimes that pisses me off.
- I dropped out of high school in my senior year.
- I like to have time to myself.
- My favorite beverage is water. No ice please unless it is a really hot day.
- I like beer and wine, but rarely drink it.
- We make beer and wine. Well, Roger does, with help from me.
- I love a good Manhattan. Fortunately, Roger is quite adept at making Manhattans. He always gives me extra cherries too. He is a very good man.
- I rarely eat breakfast.
- Some of my favorite foods are breakfast foods, like waffles, pancakes, popovers, and hash browns.
- I love Italian, Mexican, Vietnamese, and Korean food.
- I rarely eat fast food.
- I wish I knew more about grammar than I do.
- I start too many sentences with “I”.
- I worry that this makes people think I am self-important and arrogant.
- See 45.
Hi this is Jacquie, the Science Knitter with the Boston Terrier.
I had to come over and see if I could find pictures of your two and wasn't disappointed when I looked at your old blog. They are such characters aren't they? And always fun to have around.
I have only just joined the ScienceKnits ring and haven't had time to visit much yet, so thanks for visiting me.

Contra? Did you say contra? Let's go sometime! It's been a long time since I've been, but I was way into it for about ten years....

You couldn't possibly be married to the sweetest man on earth, because I am! :-) Maybe they're twins...
I made a mental list of things we have in common based on your 100 things, and boy, you and I must be related! Now I want to make my own list.

If we ever meet up, I control the radio station lol Seriously, too many lines could be on my list - and not even the obvious ones - woodshop rocked and if you throw something at me, I'll get a concussion.

Wow we have an awful lot in common. Too bad I'm moving, I'd love to hang with you more.
